Frequently Asked Questions

How will hiring you affect my partner’s role during the birth?

Hiring me will only increase the capability of your partner's role. I will encourage your partner to support you as much as you want them to and as much as they want to. I will not push people too far outside of their comfort zones, and will only make suggestions. But I always encourage the partner to be as involved as possible. The best support comes from the partner that is willing to learn and help. I will teach your partner the best ways they can support you, while also supporting your partner throughout this process as needed. I will teach them the techniques that I use that way they can be as involved with the birth process as much as you are both comfortable with.

What are your interactions with medical staff like?

I work for you and your partner and not for the medical staff. I will be as respectful to the medical staff as possible and will listen to them, but I speak to your wishes first. Some medical staff enjoy doulas, while others do not. I will try not to step on their toes the best I can, while trying to give you the information in the best way for you to understand.

Do you perform any physical examinations?

I, as a doula, cannot preform any physical examinations. Doulas cannot provide any medical procedures. That involves clinical tasks such as vaginal exams or fetal heart monitoring. We do not give medical advice or diagnose conditions. And we cannot make decisions for the client (medical or otherwise).

Can a doula attend even if I get an epidural? Can a doula attend if I get a C-section? Etc.

A doula can attend any and all birth situations that all parties agree to including the mother, hospital staff, and the doula themselves are comfortable with. The only limitation is the law, which states that we may not attend unassisted births. Which means you must have a medical professional there. Doulas are there to encourage and support all mothers. I am comfortable with most situations, and would love to know the situation I am stepping into.
